I Shall Not Be Moved — Psalm 16:8

Life has a way of pulling our attention in many directions.

There are responsibilities to manage.

Questions to answer.

Things we hope will happen.

Things we fear might happen.

And when our attention becomes scattered, our hearts can begin to feel unsettled.

Psalm 16:8 offers another way to stand:

Psalm 16:8

“I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.”
— Psalm 16:8 WEBU

Reflection / Encouragement

The psalmist begins by describing where he has placed his attention:

“I have set the LORD always before me.”

That is intentional.

It means choosing again and again to bring God back into view.

Not only when everything is going well.

Not only when we need an answer.

But as the steady centre of our lives.

Then comes the reason for his confidence:

“Because he is at my right hand…”

God is not pictured as distant.

He is near.

And because of that nearness, the psalmist can say:

“I shall not be moved.”

That does not mean nothing difficult will ever happen.

It does not mean we will never feel shaken for a moment.

It means our deepest foundation does not have to move with every change in circumstance.

When God remains before us, we have somewhere steady to return.

So if your thoughts feel scattered today, bring them back.

If uncertainty is pulling your attention in every direction, look again toward God.

Keep him before you.

Remember that he is near.

And let his presence steady your heart.
