CHRISTIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY

“He will be sure not to be out of the way when they want him most.”

— James Janeway

Source: Quoted in C. H. Spurgeon’s The Treasury of David — commentary notes on Psalm 34:18

These words from James Janeway appear in notes preserved in C. H. Spurgeon’s The Treasury of David alongside Psalm 34:18.

The verse declares that the LORD is near to those who have a broken heart.

Janeway reflects on that nearness in very practical language:

God will not be “out of the way” when his people need him most.

Pain often tells us another story.

When we are hurting, we can feel isolated.

When prayer seems difficult, we may wonder whether God has become distant.

When circumstances remain unchanged, we may even mistake silence for absence.

But Scripture gives us something firmer than feeling.

God is near.

Janeway’s words remind us that the hurting believer has not somehow wandered beyond God’s reach.

He has not stepped away because our heart is broken.

He has not become unavailable because we are struggling.

The very moments when we most need his presence are moments in which we can continue turning toward him.

We may not always sense his nearness immediately.

But his presence is not dependent upon our ability to feel it.

When you need him most, call upon him.

He is not out of the way.

Quote Reflection

Pain can sometimes convince us that God must be somewhere far away.

James Janeway reminds us of the opposite truth: when the heart is hurting and we most need God’s presence, he has not disappeared. He remains near to those who call upon him.
