CHRISTIAN QUOTE OF THE DAY
“You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”
— Augustine of Hippo
Source: Confessions, Book I, Chapter 1
These words appear near the beginning of Augustine’s Confessions and have endured for centuries because they describe something deeply familiar.
The human heart is always looking for somewhere to rest.
We may seek that rest in accomplishment, comfort, possessions, approval, entertainment, or simply the hope that tomorrow will be easier.
Some of those things can bring temporary relief, but Augustine points toward something deeper.
Our hearts were made for God.
That means our deepest peace is not dependent upon everything around us becoming perfect. It can begin when we stop searching everywhere else for what only God can provide.
There will still be responsibilities to carry and questions we cannot immediately answer.
Yet even in the middle of those things, we can turn our hearts toward God.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do is simply become still for a moment, remember whose we are, and allow our restless hearts to rest in him.
Quote Reflection
If your heart feels unsettled today, do not feel that you first need to solve everything around you. Turn toward God as you are and allow his presence to become a quiet place of rest.
